Sometimes life throws unexpected curveballs, difficult moments, and challenges.

One alone must choose to view these as reasons to fail or opportunities to excel. Only a few months before I completed a bachelor’s degree at the University of Puerto Rico, I had flown to New York to escape the pain of a very difficult personal situation. At the time, I was devastated, frustrated, and confused.

I went from job to job trying to find a future. It was in January 1991 when I had the blessing of meeting a person who became a key influence in my future. He was the vice president of a Fortune 500 Company that hired me for an entry-level HR position.

At the time, I did not realize the importance of this opportunity.

My boss was my coach and mentor. He patiently and consistently provided guidance throughout my 13-year tenure at that company.

This was where I gained a solid foundation in major areas of human resources management. His coaching was instrumental in my development, education, and motivation to become a well-rounded HR professional.
